Jason Aguilar’s race report written by Bob Aguilar
5/23/2010 Buttonwillow Raceway Park
After his first Pro GP win last month, and winning at the big track at Buttonwillow earlier this month, Jason was hoping for a big weekend at SCminiGP’s Round 4 at Buttonwillow Kart Track. Starting out in Saturday’s practice though, Jason was really struggling with the bike. “I just couldn’t get a good feel, and the bike was sliding all over in the turns”, Jason explained. Jason was knocking about 1 second off his lap times with each session, but he was still several seconds off the leader’s pace.
In Sunday’s first heat race, Pro GP, Jason started 9th out of 10 bikes and struggled to a 4th place finish. Things got worse in the Pro Extreme with Jason finishing in last place. The bike was fast enough to run with the leaders, but something was wrong with the handling in the corners. Jason made a call to Josh Bartnik of JB Suspension. After discussing the problems, Josh recommended several changes to the suspension settings. When we made the changes to the rear shock, we also discovered that the rear shock seal was leaking fluid. With the changes made, Jason waited for the other riders to approach the grid so he could have some room to get used to the changes on his warm up lap. The changes helped quite a bit, with Jason’s lap times improving by 1.5 seconds, but the shock was still leaking. Jason was now able to stay in contact with the 3rd place rider, but still finished a disappointing 4th in the Pro GP final. While Jason has had 2 DNFs this year, when his bike was running at the end of the race, he had either won or finished 2nd. So, 4th place was unfamiliar and uncomfortable territory to Jason.
Jason got back on the phone with Josh and further adjustments were made before the start of the Pro Extreme final. Jason went from last to 4th in the first turn, but the 3rd place rider was pulling away. By the third lap, Jason started to close the gap. On the penultimate lap, Jason got right behind the 3rd place rider. Making his move onto the main straightaway on the final lap, Jason got a draft and motored into 3rd place. While still struggling with the turns, Jason dug deep and fought to hold onto 3rd place.
Special thanks to Josh Bartnik of JB Suspension for getting Jason onto the podium. JB Suspension has now rebuilt the rear shock, and modded the rebound. With no leaks and better handling, Jason is looking forward to next month’s race at Adam’s Motorsports Park in Riverside.
